He was a painter. He is one of us

Professor Nikolai Zagrekov was a Russian by birth who lived and worked in Germany. A painter, prominent exponent of the New Objectivity school and an architect. He was born on May 20th 1897 to the family of a lawyer in Saratov, on the Volga river.  In 1918 he moved to Moscow and in 1921 left Russia with his wife Gertrude Haller, who was of German origin, to continue his studies in Germany. He remained in touch with his family in Russia until 1937, when his brother’s arrest by the NKVD (predecessor of the KGB), on charges of spying for Germany, prompted him to cut off contact with his relatives in the Soviet Union out of fears for their safety.
